A short history

Within a few years, we have grown from a small pub meet-up to an internationally recognised events company.

In 2014, Luke Reed had recently sold his digital recruitment business and was looking for a new venture in life. Having established strong connections in the industry, he was invited to attend ‘meetups’ established for UX professionals. He was disappointed to find that many were being organised by individuals with personal agendas or to benefit their agencies. He realised there was a huge gap in the market for professional and independently organised events that focused on high quality content, delivered in a fun and engaging way.

Luke launched his first UX event in a pub on a rainy Tuesday night in early 2015, having loosely gathered attendees and speakers using his network. He called this meetup ‘The UX Crunch’. Whilst a modest 17 people attended the first event; through the consistency of approach and a revolutionary idea to host events at the headquarters of big UX brands, its reputation grew. Word spread about an organically grown meetup group that was producing a series of social events with educational content for UX practitioners.

During this initial success, Luke recruited Myles McMorrow as co-founder, to help build the event offering. Within a year and a half, the UX meetups had grown to over 6000 annual attendees, and the company had launched its first UX conference; ‘UX LIVE’ (now in its third year). Due to the success of that event and the company’s next conference ‘The FinTech Design Summit’, the team were able to hire an Events Manager (Steven) and Marketing Manager (Mike). Both were excited to help build a community-driven company from the ground up.

Now entering the companies fourth year, with two more conferences on the horizon, the plans for 2019 appear as ambitious as ever. They include: hosting a variety of new meetups abroad, carrying out their first corporate training events, and establishing their first conference in New York. Having come a long way from a pub meetup; Tech Circus are still as committed as ever to their values of providing open access to education in Tech, with the overall aim to help every member of their community learn, connect and grow.
